The Department of History was established in Sindhudurg District Taluka Kankavali Arts & Commerce College

Kharepatan in 27th July 2012 Since its inception, along with academic, it has excelled in establishing Co-curricular and Extra Curricular activities.

The Department of History was established in 27 th July 2012 with the sole aim of Providing historical knowledge which is the help of Competitive Exams to the Rural students as well as to Providing information about Historical Places, Forts, Temples,Sculptures, Caves, Statues.In the year of establishment The Department of History had just 56 students and one staff member. This picture has totally change now. At present 86 students are pursuing their studies at undergraduate at the able guidance of 1 lecturer and one visiting faculty.

Vision :

The History Department aims to make the students aware of the past and its legacies through teaching, research and extension activities in Indian history in the context of world history. We believe that only a critical understanding of the past will enable the students to understand the present and help them look towards the future.To create a life of Awareness, Fulfilment and Responsible Citizenship.

Mission :

  • Transform the students into citizens who are critically informed about the past and its consequences for the present
  • Promote studies in history, society and culture of Maharashtra in general and Maratha history in particular
  • Empower students to cope with the challenges of Globalization by instilling in them a life-long passion for learning about the past. The knowledge about the interconnections between the Global, National, Regional and Local history will equip the students to face the challenges with confidence.

Aims :

  • Understand the methods of Historical enquiry, including how evidence is used rigorously to make Historical claims, and discern how and why contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past have been constructed.

Objectives :

  • To create curiosity and interest among the learners about historical facts and figures culture, heritage and good traditions.
  • To make the learners realize the past mistakes and learn to avoid them for better future.
  • Provide multi-causal explanations of major historical developments based on a contextualized analysis of Modern World History.
  • To create a sense of national integration and nationalism.

Salient Features Of Department

The University offers Undergraduate Honors and General Course in History. The outcomes of this Course are as follows:

Students who complete the History Honors might come up the following knowledge and skills

1. Students will be able to learn history of India and Historical personalities

2. Students will have knowledge of development through the study of social, eco. religious history and other contemporary forms of culture.

3. Students will be capable of performing research, analysis, and criticism of various events from different movements.

4. Students will develop intellectual flexibility, creativity and skill.

5. Students will be able to use the skills acquired to get apprenticeships and initiate into jobs in various fields related to humanities digital or otherwise.

6. Student will be able to learn a basic narrative of historical events in a specific region of the world.

7. Student can distinguish primary and secondary sources.

8. Understand and evaluate historical ideas, arguments, and points of view.

9. Evaluate competing interpretations and multiple narratives of the past.

10. Student will be able to assess primary historical evidence and compile a bibliography.

11. Student can present clear and compelling arguments, based on critical analysis of diverse historical sources, and effectively communicate his interpretations in written essays and/or other media.

12. To develop a research question and complete a well-supported piece of historical writing

14. Learn a basic narrative of historical events in a specific region of the world in a specific time frame

15. Distinguish between primary and secondary sources

16. Understand and evaluate different historical ideas, various arguments, and points of view.

17. Evaluate competing interpretations and multiple narratives of the past.

18. Gather and assess primary historical evidence.

19. Compile a composite bibliography.Present clear and compelling arguments, based on critical analysis of diverse historical sources

21. Articulate factual and contextual knowledge of specific places and times, to make careful comparisons (across time, space, and culture) and to discern how each generation (including theirs) uses the past for present purposes.

22. Students should understand academic honesty, a concept presented to them in all history classes.

23. Students should understand the basic skills that historians use in research.

24. Students should understand the basic skills that historians use in writing.

25. Students should understand the basic tools of historical analysis.

27. Students should develop a secular outlook towards society.

28. Students should believe in the equality of man irrespective of caste, creed, religion and colour.
