History of NSS

The National Service Scheme (NSS) is an Indian Government-sponsored Public Service programme conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports of the Government of India.

NSS was launched in Gandhiji’s Centenary year, 1969, aimed at developing student's personality through community service, is a voluntary association of young people in Universities, Colleges and at +2 level working for a campus-community linkage.

In May 1969, a conf student representatives (of universities and institutions of higher education) convened by the Ministry of Education and the University Grants Commission also unanimously agreed that a national-service scheme could be an instrument for national integration. The details were soon worked out and the Planning Commission sanctioned an outlay of ₹5 crores for the NSS during the Fourth Five-Year Plan.

On 24 September 1969, the Union Education Minister Thiru V.K.R.V. Rao launched the NSS at 37 universities in all states. The scheme has been extended to all states and universities in the country and also +2 level institutes in many states.

About NSS Unit… (College)

The National Service Scheme (NSS) Cell at Arts, Commerce and Science College, Kharepatan, plays a pivotal role in fostering a sense of social responsibility and community engagement among students. Established in the academic year 2012-2013, the college swiftly recognized the importance of instilling civic values and launched its NSS unit in the 2014-2015 academic year. Under the capable leadership of Shri. Vaseem H. Sayyed, the appointed NSS Programme Officer, the scheme began with an enthusiastic initial strength of 50 student volunteers.

The NSS Cell is committed to the holistic development of students by engaging them in various community service activities, thereby nurturing their leadership qualities and social consciousness. The programme encourages students to participate in a diverse range of activities such as health camps, literacy drives, environmental conservation projects, and disaster relief efforts. These initiatives not only benefit the community but also provide students with invaluable experiences that enhance their personal and professional growth.

Through regular participation in NSS activities, students learn the importance of teamwork, develop organizational skills, and build a sense of empathy and dedication towards societal welfare. The NSS Cell at Arts, Commerce and Science College, Kharepatan, continues to thrive as a beacon of community service, significantly contributing to the institution's mission of creating responsible and socially aware citizens.
